August brings another art walk on Aug. 4, and the month-long Art Port Townsend. Here is a preview of upcoming shows and events.

Northwind Arts Center

Art Port Townsend kicks off Aug. 2 at Northwind Arts Center. An awards ceremony is at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3, followed by a juror talk at 1 p.m. Aug. 4, which also is the day of Art Walk. Other upcoming Art Port Townsend events include an Ekphrastic Write-in at 7 p.m., Aug. 7. See northwindarts.org for a full schedule of events, which also includes a studio tour.

Northwind also presents Joe Wuts as its featured artist of the month.

Port Townsend School of the Arts

Port Townsend School of the Arts (PTSA) will inaugurate the first annual Sherry Grover Art Sparks Benefit Sale, Aug. 4 – 31 in its Art Experience Space at 236 Taylor St.

Local artists, PTSA faculty, students and Port Townsend Luminaries have picked up over 500 painting tiles to create original works to benefit the non-profit education school. Each piece will be sold for $40 on a first-come, first-served, buy-it-and-take-it basis. Half the proceeds will go to the artist and half to PTSA.

Its namesake, Sherry Grover, was passionate about arts, artists and the business of art. “She loved learning and teaching and developed a program called Art Sparks to empower artists to take charge of their careers by becoming better business people,” reads a press release from PTSA. “Her cutting-edge approach touched lives of many artists over the years and can be linked to several local success stories. The show is a tribute to Sherry’s contribution to our vibrant arts community.”

Gallery 9

Artists Carolyn Doe and Judith Komishane's will be Gallery 9's featured artists for the month, starting Saturday, Aug. 4.

Doe will present her latest paintings and batiks to convey homage to the tree, their grace and place in the landscape. “I have always been drawn to trees,” Doe siad. “To be among them is soothing to me.” Before she paints using oils,  she takes walks in the woods and meadows of Marrowstone Island. Her batiks are applied using exacting hand and complemented by free-flowing painting on the silk fabric background, using a combination of palette knife techniques and sometimes incorporates ecoprinting for a mixed media effect.

Doe will demonstrate her process during the Art Port Townsend Open Studio Tour, slated for Aug. 18 and 19.

Along with Doe, Komishane will also showcase nature in her jewelry making. Komishane embellishes her necklaces with petrified wood, an actual cottonwood branch and various leaves dipped in gold and silver. The local artist began beading 10 years ago, and has shown her work through a variety of shops and venues on the Olympic Peninsula.

Port Townsend Gallery

Phillip Carrico will be one of artists Port Townsend Gallery will present this month.

Carrico is a printmaker, who got his start when his was a freshman in college then teaching art in Fairbanks, Alaska for over 20 years.

The gallery will also feature Loran Scruggs, who has been making pieces out of tin cans since 1991. Using cutting, folding, rivets, and slot and tab methods, Scruggs found a niche place in the art community. She soon incorporated bottle caps in 2002 whens he started making whistles, transitioning to plaques shortly after.

Port Townsend Gallery is located at 715 Water St.

The Artful Sailor Whole Earth Nautical Supply

For The Artful Sailor's featured artist, Steve Hendricks of Hendricks Woodworking will take the title.

At 42 years old, Hendricks is a self-taught artist and disabled Marine Corps veteran. He was inspired by his grandfather to take up woodworking in December 2016, leading him to purchase woodworking tools and teach himself the trade. In the nearly two years, Hendricks' work includes lighthouses, cutting boards and natural-edge furniture, and has shown his creations at festivals and community events.

Sea shanty music will be performed by Mike James and light refreshments will be provided.

Elevated Ice Cream

As Art Walk participants stop for some welcome cold refreshments at Elevated Ice Cream, they will also get to see the work from preschool through eighth grade art from students at Sunfield School and Biodynamic Farm.
