A Village Council meeting, a graduation and a Porsche

Nice weather brings out the nice cars. I met a fellow from Keller Lane who commiserated with me about cars we bought, drove, sold and wished we still had. His was a unique 1977 Corvette, mine was a 1965 Porsche Cabriolet, and you may have stories of your own.

Pang, the foreign exchange student staying with BJ and me, has been going full tilt for a couple of weeks trying to get in activities with friends and Rotarians. It caught up with her early last week as she came down sick for a couple of days. The good news is that it happened after we toasted s’mores on a neat portable fire pit we borrowed from Cheryl Wheeler. We need to either borrow it for the summer, an idea Cheryl thinks is a bad idea, or buy one of our own, which Cheryl thinks is a good idea.

The Port Ludlow Village Council meeting agenda last week held a wealth of dignitaries. County Commissioner Kathleen Kler gave an update on several subjects, with particular emphasis on the budget.

Sheriff David Stanko gave an update on his department’s operations, particularly a review of some communication problems with a recent burglary in Port Ludlow. He mentioned that significant police activities are published in the newspaper, after which a member of the audience mentioned that they did not get the paper so they didn’t get the information. Maybe I should arrange a subscription.

A representative from the planning department spoke on the current update to the county’s comprehensive plan. He was soon followed by the Village Council approving the submission of recommendations for improvements to the plan focused on tree-cutting activities in the master planned resort of Port Ludlow.

Diana Smeland, president of Port Ludlow Associates, updated the attendees on PLA activities, highlighting the fact that the better weather brought more people who played golf, boated, stayed at the Inn at Port Ludlow and, most importantly for us locals and PLA, bought houses!

There is a new baseball team here on the peninsula. The Port Angeles “Lefties” started their inaugural season in the West Coast League last Thursday eve. They play teams hailing from Bend, Oregon, to Victoria, B.C., over the next 10 weeks. They had a little bad luck in the season opener, losing 11-2. No matter, let’s take a look at the “Lefties” this summer!

We are trying to keep up, again, with all the activities around a high school senior at the end of the year. I mean, the last time we had a 17-year-old in the house was 25 years ago. Pang is involved with all of the events, including the tasks Rotary puts on her at the end of her stay, and the need to pack up all her stuff to take home to Thailand. It is plenty of fun, though.

We are looking forward to seeing the graduation ceremony and the presentation of awards and scholarships earned by the local students. It is a great time of the year for students, family and friends.

As these students go on to whatever, I am optimistic they will heed the words from Theodore Rubin: “Kindness is more important than wisdom, and the recognition of this is the beginning of wisdom.”

Love a curmudgeon and have a great week.
