There are many things distressing about Julie Jaman’s outburst at the Port Townsend YMCA swimming pool and her follow-up statements, widely disseminated through conservative outlets, expressing her fear and dislike of trans people and her sense that she is in some way victimized. My heart goes out to the young trans staff member who was the object of such unnecessary vitriol as well as the children who had to watch such an unhinged performance.
As a local activist, Julie Jaman should know better than to verbally attack and dehumanize a young person who has done nothing to deserve such abuse. There is a wealth of information out there about transgender reality and changing perceptions of gender in society. Jaman’s repeated emphasis on her being a “Mama Bear” makes it even more important that she start educating herself.
