The show will go on.

But where, that’s something to be sorted out still.

The second annual Young Artist Competition sponsored by the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra is planned for Saturday, April 10.

Organizers of the competition said the venue is yet to be determined. 

The event is open to players of all orchestral instruments and the piano; contestants must be 4 to 22 years of age and have resided in Jefferson County for at least one year at the time of the competition. 

“We aim not so much to rate the students against each other but to offer the hard-working and ambitious young musicians in our community an opportunity to flex their musical powers and aim high in their work with their teachers,” said Kristin Smith, coordinator for the Young Artist Competition. 

“We have unique challenges this year in how we will manage the auditions whether virtually or recorded, but we will not let our students down,” Smith added. “They need a chance to show the world what they can do and we want to show them that we believe in them.” 

Contestants are expected to perform a piece of concert quality for three adjudicators who will decide which performer is most deserving of the cash prizes. 

Awards of $500, $300 and $200 will be given to the three most accomplished players, and a Conductor’s Prize of $100 will be awarded to a player chosen by musical director Tigran Arakelyan. 

The first-place winner will have the opportunity to play as a soloist with the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra at a future concert. 

The deadline for applications is March 20. There is no application fee. 

The winners of last year’s competition were Kincaid Gould, clarinet (first place); Aliyah Yearian-Heuberger, violin (second place); and Zia Magill and Cora Brinton, violins (third place).
