Members of Port Townsend High School Interact and Key Club have been working together to make “no-sew” blankets and cards to thank the first responders at the Port Townsend Firehall for their service.
Interactive and Key Club both foster service and leadership within their organization, but due to restrictions posed by COVID-19, club members have struggled to find meaningful ways to provide service this year.
At a Zoom meeting in early January, the clubs decided to team up in order to make the cards and “no-sew” blankets possible.
“While they missed the camaraderie of working face to face, they were able to feel connected by problem solving the physical work of cutting and knotting the fabric into blankets in small groups in their zoom breakout rooms,” organizers said.
Both clubs met at the Port Townsend Firehall once the project was complete.
Short speeches were given by club members Grace Wentzel and Gina Brown, thanking the first responders for their service and for the extra risks they have taken during the pandemic.
The firefighters got into the spirit of the event as well: “They pulled out a truck, and hung a club banner for a photo op.”
Both clubs are hoping to begin hybrid meetings and participate in more acts of service as the state continues to re-open.
