Women to the rescue

No matter how you cut it, Saturday’s National Women’s March will be a demonstration representing the majority of the American voting public.  Final certification of the 2016 election showed 65,844954 votes for Hillary Clinton, 62, 979,879 for Trump—a margin of almost 2,900,000,000.

Protest demonstrations around the nation this weekend during and after the inauguration of Donald Trump as President will take their place in history books—in a far better light, I am sure, than the man’s presidency itself.

On Saturday, women will take charge of expressing national repugnance over the racist and misogynistic vulgarity of the self-absorbed sociopath who will smugly seat himself in the Oval Office on Friday. While women will be at the forefront, they recognize also they are heading the overall American family in their resolve. As organizers of the national Women’s March said in outlining their vision, “The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”

I will take both great pride and comfort in seeing such a multitude of great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, wives, sisters, nieces—Black, Brown, Asian, White, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, tran-sexuals, lesbians, disabled, warriors and peacemakers—banded together in behalf of a virtuous society and a better world. My own immediate family will be included in both Seattle and Portland—my wife (a great grandmother) and all of our daughters and granddaughters.

A relevant news story the other day was headlined: “A Republican politician just grabbed a woman by the p*ssy and gave a terrible excuse.” The story began: “A local Republican politician in the posh town of Greenwich, Conn., was arrested recently for grabbing a woman by the genitals, an assault he and his lawyer characterized as a playful gesture.’ Christopher von Keyserling, 71 and a long time member of the Greenwich town council, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault. He was released on $2,500 bail and has a court date set for January 25. The incident occurred last month when von Keyserling encountered a 57 year-old woman in a hallway. A brief political argument ensued in which von Keyserling reportedly said ‘I love this new world, I no longer have to be politically correct.’ When the woman tried to walk away, von Keyserling allegedly reached between her legs and pinched her groin, adding to the woman that ‘it would be your word against mine and no one will believe you.’ That’s right. In Trump’s America, Republican politicians can now ‘grab women by the p*ssy’ since they don’t ‘have to be politically correct’.”

How “great again” is this, America?

In case you’ve forgotten, the original “grab . . .” phrase inspiring the above was caught on video tape when mouthed by Trump as he described privileged and OK behavior—and was publicized during his campaign last year.

I take up this current Greenwich incident because it is an epitome. It stands as an example of the Pandora-box opening that is the ascension of Donald Trump. The success of his campaign already has empowered all manner of bestial proclivities bred in the rat-infested alleyways that are a part of human nature. Racism already has erupted around the country, from the primary school level on up, through the rationalization of Donald’s example by words and actions. His denigration of women has loosed the troglodytes from their caves. Heightened fear is returning to the streets from which our society has been laboring to remove it.

General disregard for compassion and empathy also already is being seen in Trump’s World—as illustrated by callous disregard for the physical and mental health of average citizens and their loved ones. It’s also already obvious that global environment will be sacrificed on the military-industrial altar as acquisition of wealth by the privileged few is established as an official national religion.

And this is just the beginning of our political apocalypse.

Thank you, women of America, for rising up on behalf not only of your sex, but also on behalf of humankind. Hopefully, the life of our Democracy will be sustained through widespread emulation of your spirit.
