Wine seat warmers

An evening at the Port Ludlow Yacht Club almost always yields a good story or two. Last Saturday’s meatloaf dinner did not fail. (Polly Peters makes good meatloaf.)

Pete Seeger said, “Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get when you don’t.” One of our friends who is a member of the Yacht Club has access to a “friends and family” price from a good California winery. He is also kind enough to occasionally share this access with me. Last week provided an opportunity to take advantage of the lower prices, as long as you were willing to buy a case. As a result, he put in an order for five cases of wine to be shipped to his home, some of which were for BJ and me. A short time later, he modified the order to six cases. All is good. Three days later, 11 cases of wine showed up on his doorstep. He got an educational experience on the fine print of the wine-ordering process. Now, he just might have an extra case of wine available.

On the same evening at The Wreck Room, I met Karen and Paul Moreau, who moved into Port Ludlow last fall from Pioneer Square in Seattle. They claim to not miss the noise, light and lack of green grass available for their 90-pound dog. Paul jumped right into the local theater scene with a part in the upcoming Port Ludlow Players’ presentation of “Nude with Violin.”

Five performances of the Noël Coward play will take place at The Bay Club, April 6-9. I ran into play director Val Durling at Snug Harbor last week, and she suspects it may sell out soon, so go out there and get your tickets.

BJ and I celebrated our 49th wedding anniversary separately last week. She caught an early flight to Florida to visit old friends and her sisters. Of the five folks she visited, four of them were at our wedding, so I guess there was a way she could celebrate without me, given the availability of some red wine. Some friends here have speculated she might have had a one-way ticket. (Not true – I think.) I actually took her to our daughter’s home in Seattle the night before so that our daughter could take her to the airport to catch the 7:30 a.m. flight. On the ferry ride over, we encountered Jan Quick and Nancy Clancy, both of whom recently relocated from Port Ludlow. Jan confirms their award-winning German shepherd dog actually seems to enjoy life better across the sound.

Now, for some miscellaneous items.

Even though this Saturday is April Fools’ Day, I will spare longtime readers of this column another rehash of the call for a petition drive demanding seat warmers in the Beach Club bathrooms. The UW Huskies women’s basketball team was defeated in the round of “Sweet Sixteen” NCAA basketball tournament. Gonzaga is in the Final Four. The roads in Port Hadlock are cleaner this week after former Jefferson County Library director Ray Serebrin led a dozen Rotarians in the quarterly cleanup effort. This is the last week you can order Rotary Roses and select your color, so get on it. (You can still order after April 1 but you might not get the color you want.) Yes, Ramsey Smith might have some wine for sale.

Love a curmudgeon and have a great week.
