Key City Public Theatre is bringing the party to the park this summer with their production of Shakespeare’s “Merry Wives of Windsor,” which opens August 2 at Chetzemoka Park. The comedy features the fat knight, Sir John Falstaff, although in Key City’s modernized production, his armor has been replaced with a Hawaiian shirt. Short on cash, the buffoonish Falstaff, played by KCPT actor Brendan Chambers, hopes to seduce two wealthy, married women. But the wives, played by Crystal Eisele and Krista Curry, are more wily than they appear. Not impressed by receiving identical letters from the aging, overweight suitor, the two wives team up and the scheming that ensues leaves Falstaff in some sticky situations. Meanwhile, three different men are vying for the hand of a young maiden, leading to a challenge for a duel and some major misunderstandings. The play will be an immersive experience, said Key City Artistic Director Denise Winter. Overlooking Admiralty Inlet, the performance takes place in a grassy nook in Chetzemoka Park, where playgoers are invited to bring a picnic, lawn chairs and settle in for the ride. “The ‘Merry Wives’ ensemble will delight audiences with their farcical antics, pratfalls, improv, food fights, and more, as they tease, taunt and titillate their archrivals and your funny bone,” said Winter. KCPT apprentices Genevieve E. Barlow, Bry Kifolo and Ciel Pope are also featured in the play, as well as Shakespeare in the Park veterans Maggie Bulkley, Sam Cavallaro, Tom Challinor, David Wayne Johnson and D.D. Wigley. Newcomers include actors Tristan Riley, Krista Curry, Jeff Groves and Port Townsend High School “Cabaret” emcee Orion Pendley. Selena Tibert, who starred in this summer’s Cole Porter Revue, will appear, and an ensemble of children, straight from their KCPT summer camp professional theater training experience, joins the cast. Performances are every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 25. Seating starts at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show. Admission is pay-what-you wish, and tickets can be purchased in advance on KCPT’s website. “If you enjoy Jefferson County’s Fair, Old School 4th of July, Uptown Street Fair or Rhody Carnival, then pack your picnic, grab your friends, come and be merry,” said Winter. “Guzzle a root beer float with Sir John Falstaff and revel in this family-friendly comedy at your favorite city park.”
