‘We are accruing a huge debt to the natural world’

In response to Ron Gregory’s letter from the May 16th leader:

We are constantly seeing the consequences of endless economic and population growth i.e. deforestation/habitat loss, ocean acidification, climate change, rapidly expanding species extinction.

Paul Ehrlich was right, however, his predictions were premature. If human population reaches 9 or 10 billion coupled with capitalist orthodoxy and continued burning of fossil fuels,a perfect storm will occur.

Resource wars, food shortages, huge migrations of people from sea level rise and extreme weather events, worldwide political instability will become the norm in the middle and latter part of the 21st century.

It’s utterly foolish and preposterous to think the world can sustain an economic system that endlessly grows or a human family that grows along with it.

We are accruing a huge debt to the natural world. That debt will become increasingly glaring and irrevocable.
