For the first ever Adventuress Cup, competitors from all over the area converged on Shilshole Bay in the morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 20. Among them was the 72-foot schooner Red Jacket.

Crewing Red Jacket were Craig and Ryan Downey, Bill and Darlene Stange, Eli Stevens, Thomas Gregory, Tami Allen and Nico Jensen. At the helm was Aaron Wenholz.  Filling the role of ship's dog was Scrappy, an 18-year-old Jack Russell mix.

It seemed that the thick banks of wildfire smoke had cleared just in time for the event, having only dissipated some 24 hours prior to the race. All seemed as if it was set to go off without a hitch, as the competitors milled about near the start line patiently waiting for the call to ready for the race.

But the call never came.

Ultimately, the race was abandoned, for lack of a breeze, but much like the wind that day, the mood stayed light. Competitors cracked jokes over the VHF radio channel for the race and the Adventuress' crew broke into random fits of dance as they passed abeam of the other would-be racers.

Perhaps a rematch is in order, organizers say. For more information visit SoundExp.org.
