Waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel | Life in Ludlow

Posted

A week into a new Presidency and the anxiety we lost about the last one seems to have been added to the anxiety about getting vaccinated.

First of all, BJ and I want to thank several of you who contacted us with leads on getting vaccinated. It is very much appreciated.

With a phone call we got our first shots at the Tri-Area Pharmacy thus avoiding trips to Silverdale, Edmonds, Seattle, Tacoma, (Tacoma?), and other faraway lands.

My unprofessional observation is that many folks today are more anxious about getting vaccinated than they were last summer about the pandemic. I keep hearing that the best medical strategy against the COVID is to wear a mask, so let’s do that.

If you have children at home getting educated at the kitchen table you have challenges beyond those of many of us. I am not sure I could have managed them 40 years ago. (Yes, I know, BJ could have.) In fact, I can enthusiastically report anecdotally that for many of us it feels like there are more young folks around here who may have those kind of challenges. They have my sympathy but for the rest of us we should be thankful and calm in the knowledge that the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight.

At the LMC Finance Committee meeting last week via “Go-to-Meeting” on-line software there were a couple of people who got a chuckle from my pajamas. Hey, it was morning.

Frankly, the longer the pandemic goes on the harder it will be to return to a society requiring pants and bras. The light at the end of the tunnel needs to get here sooner!

The games to determine who plays in the Super Bowl are over. My Kansas City Chiefs led by Patrick Mahomes made it back to the game by beating the Buffalo Bills. The last time the Bills were in the Super Bowl in 1994 the starting tight end was Pete Metzelaars. Pete went to, you guessed it, Wabash College! And you thought you cared. He is the only professional athlete I know of ever from Wabash.

This year I was saddened to see the Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of Tom Brady. If you watch much TV you might remember the Allstate insurance ads that feature Mahomes and Rodgers. Unfortunately for Allstate, Rodgers is not going to be playing in the game. It would have been a marketing coup.

Recently Stephanie Buehler sent me some information on some “tiny housing” being built and then made available to some of our local homeless folks with eye toward seniors. OlyCAP and Bayside Housing have taken the lead on this project which is being erected on land owned by the Chimacum United Methodist Church. As you might suspect they are working to make sure they are conforming to county regulations and from what I have heard it is going well. This is a project worth monitoring.

You should have received a ballot allowing you to vote in the upcoming Chimacum Schools levy election. I encourage you to support this important issue.

Since football and presidents are on my mind, I thought you would enjoy being reminded of a confession from All Pro Detroit Lions defensive tackle, Alex Karas. “I never graduated from Iowa. But I was only there for two terms — Truman’s and Eisenhower’s.”

Love a curmudgeon, wear a mask and keep cool!
