Voilà, pétanque!

Port Townsend is home to an active group of pétanque players, including Bekah Howe, the first American to win a medal for the United States.

The 125-year-old French game involves tossing a boule (ball) underhanded towards a smaller target ball (or cochonnet) and lands closer than the competition or knocking it further away from an opponent’s boule.

Here are some images from the Oct. 16 competition as well as more casual play in recent weeks. All of it was organized by the Port Townsend Petanque Alliance at Fort Worden.
