I’m not a hunter, and yet I have so enjoyed Beth Kennedy’s column, “The Careful Carnivore.” She’s a real writer with a lively voice and self-deprecating humor that makes me smile every time. Her column informs me about a pastime that has been an integral part of our region for generations.
Also, as a carnivore myself, I think the ethics of taking personal responsibility for killing the animals that one eats, animals who had a chance to live in their natural environment, kinda beat out my own less challenging approaches to acquiring animal-based protein. I do try to eat mindfully, which for me means eating less meat and then paying a premium for cuts from responsibly-raised animals ... all the while knowing that the most ethical approach would be to go vegan. And yet, flawed human that I am, I have not given up my meat. And I do appreciate the chance to enjoy the adventures of my hunting friends vicariously, through Kennedy’s informed eyes.
