Vega will focus on challenges facing the city | Letter to the editor

When we meet a candidate we presume that some things are automatically true. We presume that the candidate has some idea of the duties and responsibilities of the position for which they are running; that they are running because they have a feel for the problems that exist in the community and have ideas and programs in mind to solve those problems.

We also presume that the candidate has no other agenda than to serve their constituents.

Sadly, these presumptions are often not true. Many times candidates have very little idea of what the duties and responsibilities of the office really are and therefore can have no realistic grasp of the issues and ways to alleviate the problems that the citizens face. Also, some candidates run because they want the supposed power and prominence that goes along with holding public office, no matter if the people are let down.

Fortunately for us the candidate who is running for City Council Position 5, Tyler Vega, suffers none of these flaws. He is focused on the challenges facing the people of Port Townsend: housing, inequality, disaster preparedness, excessive waste, traffic and parking congestion. Tyler is not afraid to ask the hard questions, will listen to anyone with a good idea and firmly believes in opening up city politics to the residents of Port Townsend.

At the League of Women Voters forum Tyler said,” A commitment to valuing people over profits. We are becoming a community that values human potential over harmfully pursuing profits. We need our government aligned with our values.”

It’s time for the many in PT to have a voice. We’ve had to listen to the few for too long.

Vote Vega for city council Position 5.
