USS Nimitz (CVN 68), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier homeported at Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, was conducting “routine operations” when it made its Feb. 18 port call at Naval Magazine Indian Island, according to its public affairs officer, Lt. Cmdr. Elizabeth Doughtery.
About 1,000 sailors from the Nimitz visited Port Townsend, taking charter buses from Indian Island to Port Townsend through Feb. 19, according to the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Recently, the Nimitz officially wrapped up its role in Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) Oct. 21, 2019, having launched 1,267 sorties and dropping 876 pieces of ordnance in the 5th Fleet area of operations. Nimitz began flying OIR missions on July 25, 2019, and during its 91 days in the region, the ship and its crew built 1,112 pieces of ammunition.
