The teenager accused of stabbing a family member in Port Ludlow Monday evening was "possibly high or having a psychotic episode," a detective with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
A 66-year-old Port Ludlow man was stabbed to death by a 17-year-old family member in his home on the western edge of the Port Ludlow Golf Course Nov. 29.
The victim has not yet been identified.
Detective Sergeant Brett Anglin said the wife of the stabbing victim called 911 and deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Dunsmuir Road at 6:34 p.m. Monday.
The woman told 911 dispatchers her son had stabbed her husband.
The teenager ran off after the stabbing.
Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the Port Townsend Police Department responded, and a perimeter was set up to keep the teenager from slipping away.
The stabbing victim was found on the front porch of the home. An aid unit was summoned, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene less than an hour later.
The teenager was soon found on the golf course behind the home, Anglin said.
Port Townsend Police Officer Chase Stanton found the teen and took him into custody. He was arrested at 7:26 p.m.
A knife was found in his possession, Anglin said. It was described as a fix-bladed knife.
The investigation is continuing.
"Detectives are on scene now with the Washington State Crime Lab Response Team, completing the investigation of the crime scene," Anglin said.
"The investigation at this point will take several weeks to complete," he added.
Due to the teen's age and recent state law changes, he could not be interviewed by law enforcement. Authorities indicated that law enforcement had been called to the home in the past.
The homicide suspect was taken to Jefferson County Jail for initial booking. He was later transported to a youth detention facility in a neighboring county.
Officials expect to release the name of the victim later this week.
"We'll be releasing the name of the victim shorty," Anglin said, adding that the delay was necessary to give the family time to notify other family members.
"Events like this are tragic," Anglin said, "and the family has lost two family members due to this violent act."
