In an upcoming author talk organized by the Port Townsend Public Library, writer Gene Helfman will discuss his recently published book, “Beyond the Human Realm,” which chronicles the life of an orca whale named Makai.
The online event is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30
Following the fictional story of Makai, a male orca captured n the North Atlantic Ocean, the whale is held in a marine park until he becomes a liability. Makai is slated for euthanasia, but is rescued and rehabilitated by a whale biologist and others, including a runaway Indigenous teenager with Orca Clan roots.
