Jefferson County’s solid waste transfer station is still open, however county officials are encouraging residents only use it if they absolutely must.
Monte Reinders, director of Jefferson County Public Works, asked residents to wait until they have enough of a load to make the trip to the transfer station worthwhile.
“Many people are now spending more time at home than normal, and some have decided it is a good time to clean out the garage or yard,” Reinders wrote in an email response to questions from The Leader. “This does not mean that it is a great time to visit the transfer station.”
He also asked that citizens who are sick or exhibiting signs of COVID-19 stay home.
“Expect longer waits than normal at the transfer station,” he said. “Please be patient. In an effort to provide adequate ‘social distancing’ between customers and staff, fewer cars can be accommodated on the floor at one time.”
Staff are doing their best to serve customers in this unprecedented situation, he said. To continue doing so, they need to stay healthy, and customers are asked to respect their space.
To reduce the need for self-haul, Jefferson County residents can sign up for curbside waste removal by contacting Waste Connections at murreysdisposal.com/jeffersin-county or calling 360-452-7278.
The Jefferson County Transfer Station only accepts waste originating within Jefferson County, including the City of Port Townsend. Kitsap County has temporarily closed its transfer stations to self-haul customers in response to COVID-19. Jefferson County will not accept waste originating from Kitsap County. Customers should be prepared to present identification or other proof of Jefferson County residency or property ownership.
In addition to the waste transfer station, all Jefferson County recycling sites are currently open. Reinders advises customers practice appropriate “social distancing” around others when visiting these sites.
