This seems to be the season for grandson visits, particularly the younger ones.
They are in the Seattle school system and their parents get scheduled for conferences on the boys’ progress in school the days right before Thanksgiving. That means the boys are out of school the whole week.
After the conferences, the parents need to go to work so the boys come to visit Grammy BJ and Papa. Here we go, another opportunity for BJ to spoil them.
Well, I took them to the Chimacum Café one morning, followed by a trip to the library. Uh oh, it was 9:15 a.m. and the library didn’t open until 10.
We went up the street to the Kitsap Bank and visited with bank manager Jennifer Blais. The boys actually played with the Legos in the lobby while Jennifer and I discussed Rotary finances.
OK, off to the library for some books and videos. After about 40 minutes, we left with about 112 pounds of stuff they expected to fully absorb within 36 hours.
Many of you already know this, but if it isn’t books or videos or swimming, it is Legos. There is an amazing spectrum of Lego products one can buy at amazing prices, all high. Shoot, there are even Lego sets where you can build Porsches! Yes, Neal McQuarrie, there are even Alfa Romeo Lego sets.
The South Bay Community Association holiday gala with a theme of “Winter Memories” is coming up Dec. 8 at the Bay Club. The party looks like a winner with food and entertainment and a reasonable price of $50 per ticket.
I hope they clean the place up after the party because the next afternoon is the Port Ludlow Performing Arts presentation of “Six Appeal.” They are a vocal ensemble infused with impeccable comedic timing combined with the energy and vitality of a rock band. I probably will be unable to take a nap.
On the sports front, we went to see Seattle University beat the dickens out of Denver University in the Elgin Baylor Classic in Seattle. SU normally plays at KeyArena, but the game was on campus at the cozy Redhawk Center since the arena is being rehabilitated.
I met the mother of one of the Denver U players. She, her husband and four other sons came to Seattle from Birmingham, Alabama, to see the games. Wow.
My Kansas City Chiefs were the losing team in last week’s Monday Night Football game shootout against the Los Angeles Rams. If you watched the game, you were bombarded with the fact that the game had more points scored than any other MNF game in history, 105.
At this writing, KC has a record of 9-2. They lost the two games by a total of five points, three with Los Angeles and two to New England. No matter, they are the most fun to watch this year.
For those interested in the results of the Monon Bell Game, yes, Wabash did win and, yes, Terry Umbreit did pay me the $10 he lost on the bet. If only my grandsons would quit trying to annoy me by wearing that DePauw gear BJ has given them.
With all these grandsons around, I am reminded that we never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.
