The first baby of 2020 arrives New Year’s Day

Karma Hos and Casey McConaghy were planning on getting married before their baby boy’s due date, on Jan. 7.

But when Hos woke up during the early hours of the new year, she realized their wedding plans may have been interrupted.

“We were at Casey’s dad’s house for New Year’s Eve and around 4 a.m. I started feeling the pain from contractions,” she said.

At 9 a.m. on Jan. 1, she and McConaghy arrived at Jefferson Healthcare where at 1:23 p.m. their baby boy was born—marking Jefferson County’s very first baby born in 2020.

“Now we have a ring bearer,” Hos joked. The wedding plans are still on, just postponed to a later date.

Mason Matthew McConaghy was delivered by Doctor Molly Hong at Jefferson Healthcare, with his father, Casey McConaghy and his grandmother Rhonda Hos and aunt in attendance. He weighed 6 lbs 10 oz and was 18.5 inches long.

19-year-old Hos grew up in Jefferson County and attended Chimacum Jr/High School. She got her GED at Peninsula College and recently was working at Verizon in Port Townsend. She has since left her job to be a stay-at-home mom.

28-year-old McConaghy went to middle school at Chimacum Jr/High School, but moved away during his high school years. He later returned to Jefferson County and has been working at All Weather Roofing. He’s looking forward to a job interview in the coming weeks for a position at Port Townsend Paper Company.

This is Hos and McConaghy’s first baby. They aren’t sure if they plan to have more in the future, but if they do it will be at least five years down the road.

“I’m excited about teaching him all the new things,” Hos said. “I’m excited about watching him grow, and also growing and learning from him.”

McConaghy said he is planning to be there as much as possible to see his son grow up, despite working a full time job.

“I’m nervous about being gone all the time working or traveling for work,” he said. “I know how it was when my dad was always working.”

Hos said she was scared about not knowing what to do with “something so tiny and fragile,” but that now her son has been born, everything is coming naturally to her.

“Now that he’s here, I’m more scared of other people hurting him,” she said. “Like when he got his shots, I started crying.”

Though it was a tough labor, the birth went well, she said. Everyone is healthy and happy.

“We are absolutely in love,” Hos said. “I can’t put him down.”
