The end is coming soon for our child king | Letter to the editor

We waited more than 200 years for this child king.

Back in 1776 we fought for life and liberty, but it was the pursuit of happiness that really resonated. King George took away our toys without our permission making us very unhappy — so we revolted. Since our revolution we have hungered for a king, a president, that would tell us how great we were and let us break all the rules.

Granted we’ve had presidential versions who appealed to our more spoiled natures — but nothing like this guy. He was a dream come true. He asked us why should we play with others when we had most of the toys.

He has been like a weekend dad who showers us with undeserved presents and lets us eat all the ice cream we want — as long as we tell him he is our favorite. He has encouraged the worst in us and challenged our very core.

Yet we continue to seek a single leader to bring us out of the darkness. We have clung onto this hope in spite of all that we enshrined in our Constitution and sacrificed for our Republic.

It took our nation getting sick — very sick — to put the brakes on this destructive fantasy.

Now it appears we will be getting a new king — one who will require us to take our medicine, remind us we are not alone in this world and that we must make some sacrifices so that our entire family prospers and heals over the long run.

As the cries of our child king’s tantrums recede into the night — this is the wake-up call for all of us to join together and commit to helping our national family mend and recover from this nightmare.

Time to take our medicine.
