Sergeant Troy Surber of the Port Townsend Police Department started this week as the department’s interim chief after Mike Evans announced his retirement last month.
Surber said he submitted his name for the position and was selected by Port Townsend City Manager John Mauro after speaking with the other two sergeants, Garin Williams and Jason Greenspane.
He will oversee the department as it enters a transitory phase selecting a new chief.
Surber has been with the PTPD for 23 years, serving as a sergeant for the last 12. He was a detective for two years and the Port Townsend School District resource officer for five.
Surber said he is excited for the opportunity to transition the department into new executive leadership, and he’s honored to have the confidence of the city administration.
