Students to return to in-person learning

Salish Coast Elementary will resume in-person schooling for kindergarten through second-grade blended learning students Monday,
April 12.

Attendance will be full-time, five days a week with a school day running from 8:15 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. and an early release every Wednesday at 12:50 p.m., the school has announced.

With safety regulations in mind, classrooms will be arranged in order to accommodate proper spacing for students. The students will remain with the same classroom teacher throughout the day.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recently updated guidance for schools, school staff are looking to state for details on how to proceed with students in other grades.

“We are still awaiting an announcement from the Washington State Department of Health about how the new guidance will be adopted in our state,” Sarah Rubenstein, communication director for the Port Townsend School District, said in an announcement.

“We will keep families updated with more information when we have it,” she added. “Any other changes that we are able to make to our learning model schedules would take place no sooner than April 12.”

A number of different options for third grade through 12th grade are being analyzed.

“We know that each of our families has a vested interest in having schools fully reopened. Over the course of this calendar year, we have also learned that each family will make choices based on what is right for their child or children. We know that there isn’t one plan that meets all needs or family situations,” Rubenstein added in her announcement. “But we are dedicated to continuing to work towards getting more in-person learning time for each student given the current case data in our county.”
