Students explore careers in culinary arts, welding, cosmetology and more

Welding in tight spaces, performing surgery on a horse and rescuing people from a burning building were just a few of the experiences described during two recent Career Day sessions sponsored by AAUW Port Townsend.

Eighth-grade students from Port Townsend, Chimacum, Quilcene and Brinnon public schools, 165 in total, learned about a wide range of careers and what it takes to prepare for them.

During sessions designed to expand students’ thinking about career options, speakers described their jobs and answered questions about what it’s like to work in the arts, health care, videography, engineering, public safety, carpentry, veterinary science, culinary arts, welding, propane services, cosmetology and teaching.

The presenters represented various businesses and organizations, including the city of Port Townsend’s Public Works Department, East Jefferson Fire Rescue, Chimacum Veterinary Hospital and Pet Townsend Animal Clinic, Chimacum Middle School teaching staff, Andrea Animates, Jefferson Healthcare, Port Townsend School of Woodworking, Seasons Hair Salon, Sunshine Propane and Foss Maritime Seattle Shipyard.

“One of the great things about Career Days is the variety of careers we explore with these kids,” said Debra Burt, AAUW cochair of this year’s event in a press release. “And, thanks to our wonderful presenters, the students get to experience aspects of these careers up close and hands on.”

According to Burt, the eighth-graders learned about health care services for people as well as care for animals, including some exotic species. Students tried on welding gear and participated in tool and equipment demos for carpentry, propane technology and fire and rescue services. Cooking and video animation demonstrations, on-the-spot hair styling and guidance for future teachers were also featured.

As part of their overall support for education and equity, AAUW Port Townsend and its affiliate, the University Women’s Foundation of Jefferson County, have hosted Career Days since 1995. For more information, on AAUW projects and membership, visit
