Students are top winners in regional art competition

Three student artists from Jefferson County were named winners in the Olympic Educational Service District 114 in the 50th Annual Regional High School Art Show.

Winning pieces from each of the nine educational service districts in Washington now advance to the state-level high school art show at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Regional winners in Jefferson County are Sabina Funaro, Port Townsend High School; and Zee Gossette and Claudia Wilcox of Quilcene High School.

Funaro won for her artwork called “Someday.”

Both Gossette and Wilcox were named Central Washington University Scholarship Winners, with a scholarship prize of $2,000.

Gossette earned honors for “Black Rose,” while Wilcox won for her artwork, “Pumpkin Pile.”

Organizers of the annual Olympic Educational Service District High School Art Show said the contest provides an important opportunity for the recognition of students with outstanding artistic ability. The show is open to students in grades nine through 12, and all high schools in the Olympic region were invited to submit student artwork.

This year, more than 100 pieces were entered by participating student artists and have been displayed online since mid-February.
