After a day of holiday shopping at the Chimacum craft market, merrymakers gathered for dancing and a bit of Christmas cheer as Portland-based honky-tonk musician Bobby Winstead performed songs from his newly released Christmas album at The Keg and I on Dec. 8. With eight original holiday songs and two covers of the Christmas classics — “Holly Jolly Christmas” and the Gene Autry song, “Chubby Little Fellow” — Winstead’s album “When You’re Here For Christmastime” mixes an old-time country vibe with heartfelt lyrics about love and Christmas. Engineered and mixed by Jack Dwyer in Port Townsend, the album was released Nov. 1 and features a number of different artists, including Caleb Klauder and Reeb Wilms, and The Macrae Sisters. Winstead and Dwyer have been performing and recording music together since they met in Portland in 2010, with Winstead on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, and backup from the multi-instrumental Dwyer. Joined by Port Townsend bassist Dirk Anderson at The Keg and I, the trio’s chemistry was tangible as their tunes brought dancers to the floor. The crowd tapped its feet with the beat, sang along with the chorus, and got into the Christmas spirit as Winstead, Dwyer and Anderson jived. Winstead’s Christmas CD is available on CdBaby and Bandcamp (disc or download), and at Dwyer’s local shows through the holiday season. Winstead and Dwyer currently are working on their next album, a collection of old-time duets, which will be released in 2019.
