Strange brews, faux Canadians invade PT

Posted

Pacific Northwesterners disguised as Canadians flocked to Port Townsend Jan. 24 in search of beer.

Doing their best to take on the stereotypical Canadian accent—“Want to try some beer, eh?”—fans of the film “Strange Brew” and fans of Port Townsend’s annual brewing festival, Strange Brewfest, gathered to taste test the strangest beers breweries from across Western Washington could come up with.

The 16th annual Strange Brewfest used the festival’s namesake as this year’s theme and attendees took it to heart, lining up to buy tickets dressed as Canadian Royal Mounties, and like the film’s main characters: wearing plaid shirts, beanies and ear muffs.

Meanwhile, the brewers took the word “strange” to a new level, as they do every year; producing innovative, unusual and occasionally disgusting beers and ciders.

While the line to taste the “apple fritter” beer was long, the weekend’s winner went for a more savory experiment: Doghaus Brewing, from Leavenworth, won first place for their “Chow on My Wiener Spiced Stout.” They were followed by Downpour Brewing of Kingston winning second place for their “Horchata AF Imperial Stout” and Bad Jimmy’s Brewing Co., out of Seattle, for their “McKenzie Brothers Imperial Scotch Ale.”
