Who are “they”?
As we continue to call each other names, who are they? Those who we call out as Nazis? Those who we label as “anti-trans” or “bigots”?
They are neighbors, our baristas, our waitresses, our letter carriers, perhaps a cousin or daughter-in-law.
What do they really believe? And why do they believe that?
Let’s stop assuming and guessing the answer to these questions and ask, with curiosity and respect. Port Townsend does not need to be in the national news as a town divided. We believe that we are better than this.

I applaud this letter. We never know who is on the other side or what’s in that persons heart or where their intentions lie.
I believe this city will stay divided as long as individuals keep grandstanding about how the original individual (Julie Jaman ) should repent or be punished.
It’s that same sentiment that kept the city divided during lockdowns. Many folks felt that if you weren’t vaccinated you deserved to suffer thru name calling, denial of treatment, and loss of jobs. This newspaper supported that sentiment as well by posting the article a little over a year ago.
I implore people to start thinking for themselves more instead of listening to the news. (CNN, MSNBC, FOX, doesn’t matter). Get off the news for two weeks. Research on your own. Be amazed at what you find.
Bless you all regardless. I wish the best for everyone regardless what you believe. CS.

The amazing thing is how kind people in PT actually are to one another as they go about their day-to-day. It's one of the things that makes this place special. Trust me, hailing from the big bad world outside, the last thing PT wants to do co-opt the hateful identitarian zero-sum nonsense that now afflicts the culture at large.
Please check the self-righteousness at the door, PT -- it's the least interesting thing about you -- and listen, listen, listen to each other.
Thank you for your letter, Sol.
