State prisoners may return to county due to release order

Gov. Jay Inslee announced last week that to reduce the risks of the continued spread of coronavirus among incarcerated individuals, the Washington State Department of Corrections will take steps to expedite releases for non-violent offenders, those at high risk for complications related to COVID-19 and those who were due to be released soon.

Jefferson County prosecutor James Kennedy said typically upon release, offenders will return to their county of origin. There are currently six individuals scheduled for release who originated in Jefferson County.

Kennedy said, including nearby Mason, Grays Harbor and Clallam counties, this number increases to 54.

“It is our intent to make sure that victims are informed, when applicable, and to work closely with local law enforcement and DOC Community Corrections to make sure that our community remains safe,” Kennedy said.

It is possible more inmates will be released early in the coming months, he said.

“Regardless of what happens, the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office remains committed to standing up for victims and preserving community safety,” he said.
