Somatic dance series to be taught at Fort Worden

Bill Evans is set to offer a new dance class series in the somatic field.

Evans is an internationally-acclaimed instructor of movement. The class, set at the Madrona MindBody Institute in Fort Worden, will explore expressivity, musicality, and artistry.

Each class will begin with explorations of one or more basic Laban or Bartenieff anatomical concepts that will become the basis for dancing within one’s kinesphere and dynamic movement through the general space.

Beginners beware, this class series is meant for people 16 and older who have achieved intermediate or advanced level in modern dance, contemporary dance, ballet, or jazz technique.

The six-class, in-person series will go from
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays from Feb. 18 through March 25.

Tuition for the full series costs $110 per person, and single classes are $25 apiece with participants required to give at least 24 hours notice in advance to register.

To sign up, go to madronamindbody.com and click “Series and Events,” or visit madronamindbody.com/all-events/bill-evans-somatic-dance-technique-2023.

The series will only take place if 15 or more people have registered before the opening class is scheduled to begin, and participants are encouraged to invite friends to sign up and join them for the whole series.

Evans is known throughout North America for his dance and movement pedagogy. He has created a modern dance technique style that is taught in hundreds of college dance programs and private studios. Evans has also developed expertise in helping people of all ages and movement experience levels understand more deeply how their bodies have evolved to function. He shares anatomical and metaphorical imagery through which people can find more ease, satisfaction, and joy in their integrated body-minds.
