Smith will make sure union is treated fairly | Letter to the editor

My whole working life I have been supported by unions; in the airlines and as a college faculty member. I’m glad that Lorna also comes from a strong union family. Her dad was a member of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace at Boeing and her children are also union members.

Lorna became a member of the Retail Clerks Union at age 16, working at a local bakery. She paid her way through college working there part-time.

At one point Lorna had to leave college to work full-time at the bakery to earn a down payment on a house. After the house purchase she started a family. Lorna eventually returned to college and completed her degree when her children reached school age. So Lorna understands the twisting paths that families experience with financial challenges, child care needs, and housing issues.

Lorna has successfully navigated through lean times. She cares deeply about people and knows how to fine-tune county programs and budgets to ride out a recession without staff layoffs or essential program reductions. These skills will help us protect vital county employees and essential functions that we need to respond to this crisis.

The Board of County Commissioners approves the county employee union contract. Lorna will ensure that union members are treated fairly in the bargaining process.

Lorna has worked hard since she was 16 and I know she will work hard for all of us! Please join me in voting for Lorna Smith for commissioner!
