Smith has many years of experience | Letter to the editor

In the early 1980s, I ran for Jefferson County Commissioner. It was a simpler time and I was well-qualified then to represent constituents and navigate the processes of governance.

Times have changed. Now, governance at all levels is dramatically more complex and is best served by citizens with highly developed skills, extensive experience, and a record of success in representative governance. Lorna Smith is the only candidate for county commissioner who has all three proven talents.

For 25 years Lorna supervised the Snohomish County Environmental Review Section, focusing on land use, forestry, wetlands and watershed protection and other highly complex environmental regulations, including a special focus on the Endangered Species Act. Lorna established a positive working relationship with businesses and with the tribal nations to successfully balance economic development with necessary environmental protections. Lorna understands that sustainable jobs and the environment go hand-in-hand.

Lorna has served eight years on the Jefferson County Conservation Futures Committee and Jefferson County Planning Commission. She was recently appointed to our Shoreline Management Board.

Well known and liked by our county, state and federal officials, Lorna served on the Washington State Economic Development Board. Her skills and background will help balance out the team we currently have on the board of county commissioners.

Please join me in voting for Lorna Smith for Jefferson County Commissioner in the Nov. 3 election.
