Smith has built coalitions, consensus | Letter to the editor

I am very disappointed to read and hear Lorna Smith’s opponents launch personal attacks against her because she is above the age of 50 (Jan Marquardt, July 27 letter), and claiming she would “divide rather than unite our county.” (Amanda Funaro, Aug. 12 letter). These types of attacks are unethical and don’t belong in this or any campaign. This is an attempt to paint a negative picture of Lorna’s character and accomplishments. This “winning approach” is disappointing.

Comparing the candidates records, Lorna Smith’s wonderful accomplishments could only have happened by building coalitions and consensus her entire life.

Lorna helped lead the Jefferson County Comprehensive Plan. It is our citizen-based vision for Jefferson County. Lorna facilitated years of community outreach and input from hundreds of people in every town and district. The comprehensive plan vision is replete with formal guidelines for green open spaces, business clusters, affordable housing, vibrant farms and forests, bike and pedestrian pathways. Lorna has played a significant role stopping the Northern Tier Pipeline; establishing Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge; and banning salmon net pens in our Salish Sea.

Is this what a divider would do?

Lorna is the kind of collaborator and team member the board of county commissioners needs.

Let us value and judge Lorna not by spurious rumors. Let’s keep this campaign fair and malicious rumor free. Please join me in voting for Lorna Smith for county commissioner!
