I fear the days of a quiet library may be over. I recently went to Jefferson County Library looking for a quiet place to study. After all, isn’t the library a place of study and for quiet reflection? However, the noise level could only be compared to that of a sports bar. Taking a glance around I could see the irritation on the faces of other patrons. So, I caught the attention of a staff member and respectfully asked if the library could be made quieter. To my shock, he reported this was the normal level of noise. Next, he suggested that I borrow some noise canceling headphones, which they had in supply. In my opinion that is a statement no one should hear in a library. Further, if the noise level in a library warrants such devices I fear it is no longer a library. I’d like to put this question out to our great community. Is this acceptable? Is the library a quiet place?
