Officers with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to 462 calls for service Dec. 26, 2016 – Jan. 9, 2017. Among the incidents were 1 report of domestic violence, 1 report of fireworks, 5 harassment investigations, 1 report of missing persons, 1 minor in possession, 1 missing person, 2 sex offense reports, 2 sex offender registries, 2 suicidal persons, 90 traffic stops (2 criminal), 6 complaints of unwanted persons and 16 welfare checks.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on private property in Port Ludlow at 2:15 p.m., Dec. 27. A deputy was in the area and contacted a subject that displayed signs of mental health issues. The subject departed the area. At about 2:42 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the same location for a report of the subject having returned and now being inside a fenced area. The subject was arrested later in the evening regarding another trespassing report.

Between Dec. 23 and 29, deputies responded to a residence in Brinnon for several reports of prowlers. On Dec. 24, the same reporting party requested assistance from law enforcement in locating a bag containing several firearms. Deputies assisted in searching the residence and vehicle and were unable to locate the weapons. A deputy on scene noted that the reporting party, who they were familiar with, appeared to be off their medications. On Dec. 29 the same subject was taken into protective custody after calling 911 and reporting that someone broke into their home and they had locked the suspect in the garage. The reporting party threatened to set fire to their house in an attempt to gain a quicker response from the JCSO. All the incidents were unfounded and the subject was transported to Jefferson Healthcare for a mental health evaluation.

At 7:02 p.m., Dec. 29, JeffCom 911 received a report from the U.S. Navy advising they were in radio contact with the pilot of a Cessna 182 experiencing trouble with the weather over Dabob Bay. Navy personnel further advised they had since lost sight and communication with the pilot. The plane was last observed flying eastbound at 1,200 feet in the area of Coyle Road mile post 4 around a half mile from the shore. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Search and Rescue, Quilcene Fire Rescue, Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Navy assisted in the search into the late evening hours. Due to weather, the Coast Guard and Navy were unable to search using their helicopters. The search resumed the following morning and the plane was located with the four occupants, all confirmed deceased on scene. The investigation of the crash was turned over to FAA, National Traffic Safety Board, AV Tech Services LLC (Aircraft recovery team), and a representative from Textron (The manufacturer of the aircraft).

JeffCom 911 received a report of a 75-year-old male and a 65-year-old female at 11:13 a.m., Jan. 4. who were stuck in their vehicle on Skaar Pass and unable to make it down the mountainous roads due to the snowpack. The couple reported that they had already spent two nights in their vehicle and were in need of being rescued. The sheriff’s office initiated a search and rescue. JCSO was able to assist in coordinating a response with Jefferson Search and Rescue, members of the Washington State Snowmobile association, and local residents to rescue the subjects.

Deputies were dispatched to a theft of a motor vehicle report in the Quilcene area at 9:28 a.m., Jan. 7. A deputy contacted the reporting party and took the initial theft report. Moments after speaking with the reporting party the deputy located the stolen vehicle turning into the Olympic Equipment Rentals in Port Hadlock. Both the male driver and female passenger were arrested and booked into the jail.
