The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to 311 calls for service between Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, 2017. Among those calls were 3 reports of abandoned vehicles, 14 animal complaints, 2 stops for DUI, 1 report of fireworks, 3 incidents of fraud, 5 noise complaints, 4 reports of shots heard, 10 calls about suspicious circumstances, 3 traffic collisions, 4 reports of theft, 10 traffic complaints and 10 reports of trespassing. During that period, deputies made 76 traffic stops.

The incidents below are not all encompassing and represent a portion of incidents to which the JCSO responded.

A suspected illegal marijuana-growing operation was reported at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 7 in the Glen Cove area. The responding deputy investigated the area and located a plastic ornamental plant that looked similar to a marijuana plant.

The resident West End deputy responded to a report of a 14-foot drift boat with two occupants stuck on a rock in the middle of the Hoh River at 3:10 p.m. on Aug. 7. Assisted by two Hoh tribal fisheries officers in a boat, the deputy, on an ATV, was able to rescue the stranded boaters and return them safely to their vehicle. At the time of the report, the drift boat was still stuck on the rock in the middle of the river.

Deputies served a search warrant at a Port Hadlock home at 3:05 p.m. Aug. 8 in an attempt to recover stolen property. The search warrant was served without incident. Stolen items recovered included one reciprocating saw, one metal detector and two lawn trimmers. Illegal drug paraphernalia was also recovered.

Deputies served a search warrant at a Paradise Bay residence at 3:15 p.m., Aug. 9 in an attempt to recover stolen property. The search warrant was served without incident. No stolen items were located. A resident was arrested for possession of illegal drug paraphernalia.

A deputy responded to the Four Corners Road area at 7:48 p.m., Aug. 9 after receiving a report of an intoxicated man on a Jefferson Transit bus who was yelling at and threatening the bus driver. The man was removed from the bus and issued a ban notice as requested by Jefferson Transit.

An adult called on Aug. 12 to report a 10-year-old Port Hadlock boy who was requesting to go to jail. The adult who reported the boy’s request said she did not know why he was making such statements and asked that a deputy speak with him. The deputy met with the child and explained why it is not good to go to jail. After speaking with the deputy, the boy agreed that jail was not a good place to go.

A deputy responded to the Port Hadlock QFC parking lot at 1:29 p.m. Aug. 13 after receiving a report of an intoxicated driver. Witnesses described seeing the suspect vehicle crossing into the oncoming lane on Rhody Drive and near collisions with other vehicles on Nesses Corner Road. The deputy contacted the driver and determined that she was under the influence of prescription medication to the extent that it was causing her driving to be affected. There was no indication that the driver had consumed alcohol. The deputy conducting the investigation is trained as a drug recognition expert and is legally qualified to make such determinations. The driver was arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Jail, where she was booked for DUI.

On Aug. 13, a victim reported responding to an ad posted on Craigslist advertising a yurt for sale. The victim contacted the “seller,” who requested a $1,500 deposit be sent to them. The resident transferred the money to the “seller’s” Kansas state bank account and subsequently learned that the “seller” had used another person’s Craigslist yurt ad and had no yurt to sell. The case is under investigation.
