Sally Elaine Yarr Huntingford, age 82, of Chimacum, Washington, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Sally was born on October 25, 1942, in Port Townsend, Washington, and was raised on a dairy farm in Dabob. She was one of four siblings—sisters Joan and Mary, and brother Pat—and spent her childhood playing with cousins and swimming with neighborhood kids down at the bay.
She attended Chimacum School, graduating from Chimacum High School in 1961. During her school years, Sally enjoyed playing softball, cheerleading and was beloved by her classmates. She was honored as homecoming and prom royalty and was voted “Most Popular.” In a recent interview for her granddaughter’s oral history project, she recalled those days with fondness and a smile, especially the "boyfriends with big nice cars."
After high school, Sally began her career as a dental assistant for Dr. Robert Carter. She later worked at Chimacum School as a playground teacher, where she was known and loved by generations of children. She also opened her own clothing boutique, The Corner Closet, in the Kivley Center, a venture that combined her entrepreneurial spirit and love for people. After closing her shop, she returned to the school district, where she was affectionately called “Gramma Sally” by the students.
Sally had a passion for cooking and always said dinner was her favorite meal. Her favorite dishes included French toast and spaghetti—comfort foods that reflected her warm and nurturing nature. She loved spending time with friends and hosting dinner parties at her home, where laughter and conversation were always abundant. Sally and Sterling shared a love for dancing and could light up the dance floor together—bringing energy, grace, and joy to every gathering.
She married Sterling Huntingford twice—first eloping shortly after graduation on September 18, 1961, at the Hitching Post Wedding Chapel in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and then again three months later in the Catholic Church. Their love story was one of enduring commitment and companionship.
Sally is survived by her three children, Bruce Huntingford (Brenda), Christine Cray (Adam), and Shawne Huntingford; her five grandchildren, Brandon, Zac, Krystal, Summer, and Devin; and ten great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her two sisters, Joan and Mary, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling; her parents, James Yarr and Evelyn Burnett; and her brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Janice Yarr.
Sally's legacy is one of love, laughter, friendship, and deep community roots. She will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 20th at 12:00 p.m. at Finnriver Farm & Cidery in Chimacum, WA.
