“Concerti from the Court of Frederick the Great,” presented by the 2022 Salish Sea Early Music Festival, features special guest harpsichordist David Schrader from Chicago with flutist Jeffrey Cohan and baroque chamber orchestra. The program was created by composers associated with Prussian king Fredrick the Great’s renowned musical court, including Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Joachim Quantz, and the flutist king himself.
Schrader will play Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach‘s “Harpsichord Concerto in D Minor” and the “Ricercare for Solo Harpsichord” by Johann Sebastian Bach from the “Musical Offering,” which Bach presented to the king following his visit in 1747. Cohan will play “Flute Concerti” by Frederick’s court keyboardist Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and by Frederick the Great. The Prussian king’s flute teacher, Johann Joachim Quantz, had an exact copy of a flute made by Quantz for King Frederick at an extremely low pitch, where the flute sounds particularly sonorous.
Schrader is a talented musician of wide ranges and accomplishments. He has performed as a featured soloist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and many more internationally-renowned groups, playing the harpsichord, organ, piano, and more.
The chamber orchestra includes Elizabeth Phelps and Courtney Kuroda on baroque violin, Lindsey Strand-Polyak on baroque viola, and Annabeth Shirley on baroque cello.
The concert takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 24 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Jefferson Street. There is a suggested donation of $15, $20, or $25.
Masks and vaccination are required to attend.
