Ruth was born in Le Mars, Iowa to David Charles Clarke and Marjorie (Page) Clarke. She led the life of an adventurer, the eldest of five children.

She graduated from Kansas State University in 1942 with a B.S. in Home Economics, minoring in English and journalism.

During World War II Ruth served her country in the WAVES as a Naval officer. During her service she met and married naval pilot Edward Cabler (who preceded her in death, in 2005).

In 1947 Ruth was one of a few women to acquire a pilot’s license.

After leaving the Navy, Ruth and Ed leased and ran a bed and breakfast in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

While raising their children Cynthia and Ed Jr. they lived in Seattle; Indianapolis; Belleville, Michigan; Fairbanks; and Guam before returning to Michigan.

In retirement another adventure began. They lived aboard a sailboat “playing” throughout the Caribbean for two years before sailing through the Panama Canal, setting anchor in Port Ludlow in 1980. They enjoyed many “local” voyages to Western Canada and Alaska while building a house in their spare time.

Ruth was an avid reader and active in the community with her church, aquacise, jogging, walking, gardening, first Wednesdays Luncheon, potlucks, garden club and Mexican train with friends. She enjoyed activities with her family and many friends.

She passed away peacefully in her home with her family beside her.

She is survived by her children Cynthia (John) Krumrei and Edward (Dianne) Cabler; granddaughters Bethanne (Jeremy), and Andrea (Christopher); great-granddaughter Nycole and great-grandson Zackary; two brothers; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Her memorial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Jefferson County Hospice or a charity of your choice.
