On a calm and cloudy morning, rowers launched out into the glassy water at the Northwest Maritime Center beach in their wooden crafts for the yearly Wooden Boat Festival rowing race on Sept. 7. The rowing race of 23 boats included sculling singles, doubles, triples, quads and an oct, as well as a sweep eight, longboats, kayaks, wherries, dinghies, a gig and a paddle board. Several of the boats were historic wooden Pocock shells restored by Rat Island Rowing and Sculling Club. Out in the Admiralty Inlet, the waters roughened, said racer Steve Chapin. “It looks nice and calm, but around the corner there were big rollers, tide rips and a pretty fresh breeze,” he said. Bows burying in the waves, racers fought to get back to the Maritime Center first, the air horn sounding out as each crossed the finish line. Below is the list of top finishers: 1.
