East Jefferson earned its second varsity football win in a row late last week against Vashon Island. The Rivals kept the Pirates scoreless until the final whistle in the Friday night contest, winning 19-0.
East Jefferson’s defense came up big, keeping the Pirates out of the end zone while tallying four sacks on the night.
Junior defensive end Siaumau Auseuga led the Rivals with five tackles along with two sacks, while junior linebacker Tanner Haddenham tallied four tackles, as well.
While the defense stuffed the Pirates throughout the game, East Jefferson’s offense played well, scoring three touchdowns before the final whistle.
Senior running back Logan Massie scored two touchdowns, with two big runs from 32 and 25 yards out. The senior found space all night, finishing with 163 rushing yards.
Anton Jones, senior running back for the Rivals, found the end zone as well with a seven-yard run and a total of 43 rushing yards.
East Jefferson’s senior punt returner Lonnie Kenney had a 35-yard punt return, and Rivals sophomore quarterback Cash Holmes completed four-of-six passing attempts for 40 yards.
Although Rivals Head Coach Tony Haddenham was happy to add one to the win column, he was not fully satisfied with the team’s performance.
“We weren’t playing mistake-free football like we should have been,” Haddenham said.
The Rivals accumulated 85 yards in penalty yards in the game, much to the displeasure of the head coach.
“We had more yards in penalties than Vashon had in total yards in the first half,” Haddenham said. Fortunately for East Jefferson, the penalties didn’t kill any drives. But the team “not being disciplined” will be something to address for Haddenham before their next game.
Regardless, Haddenham said he was “feeling pretty good” about his team.
“The kids fought for everything,” the coach said.
In practice this week, Haddenham is bringing the basics back, including footwork, route running, and positioning to reduce avoidable mistakes on the field.
The team needs to “get those things done in order to be more successful,” and put more points on the board, Haddenham said.
Next up on East Jefferson’s schedule is Cascade Christian at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8.
