Saturday, Oct. 11, a portion of the East Jefferson cross country teams traveled to Lakewood High School in Arlington to compete in the 42nd Nike Hole In the Wall Invitational. The meet included 153 schools from Alaska, California, Canada, Oregon and Idaho. Races began at 8:20 a.m. and continued until the final race of the day at 4:30 p.m., allowing nearly 5,000 athletes to compete. The 5K course was relatively flat and featured grass, track, mud, trail and gravel. Conditions were excellent for the Rivals runners with a mix of overcast and clear skies and temperatures in the low 50s.

The girls competed in the Varsity Silver division at 3:30 p.m. in a field of 258 runners. All four of the East Jefferson girls who competed set personal records (PRs). Senior Leah Ferland led her teammates with a 49th-place finish and a time of 20:31.4. Fellow seniors Hilina Taylor-Lenz and Michael Gregg ran solid races to place 78th and 92nd in 21:07.2 and 21:23.0, respectively. Taylor-Lenz ran a particularly aggressive last half of the race, moving up 30 places in the last mile. Freshman Charlotte Hines was the final East Jefferson competitor, placing 222nd with a time of 23:36.7, taking about 45 seconds off her previous best time.

Three Rivals competed in the Men’s Varsity Silver race at 4 p.m. Junior Joshua Yearian ran a PR of 16:30.6 to place sixth overall and take home a prize backpack awarded to the top seven. Senior Dustin Hines ran a fantastic race to break 17 minutes for the first time. His time was 16:59.2, which was good for a 25th-place finish, just 0.2 seconds behind 24th and 0.1 ahead of 26th. Nico Errichetti, also a junior, placed 27th in the field of 298 athletes with a time of 16:59.8.

In the 163-athlete field of the men’s Varsity Bronze race, the final three EJ runners of the day ran very strong races. Sophomore Zeke Banks led the Rivals with a 15th-place finish in a time of 18:15.8. Classmate Louis Sanborn had a 50-second PR to place 35th with a time of 18:46.2. Junior John Neville placed 95th with a PR of 19:35.5.

A portion of the teams will compete on Thursday, Oct. 16th, at the Lake Lap Invitational at Lake Padden, and the entire team will be competing in the third league meet at Vashon on Oct. 21st.
