Rivals cross country teams compete in state championship

The East Jefferson Rivals boys cross country team placed in fifth place and finished just four points away from winning a team trophy in the 1A Washington Interscholastic Activities Association State Championship meet Saturday.

The girls cross country team finished in eighth out of 12 teams in the event, which was hosted at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. Both Rivals teams competed in a 5,000-meter course in their final meet of the 2021 season Nov. 6.

With a razor-thin margin of nine points separating fifth-place from eighth-place teams, the girls dashed to an eighth-place overall finish out of 12 opposing squads.

Rivals sophomore stalwart Aliyah Yearian placed fifth out of 124 competitors with a time of 19:24.3. She was followed by junior Camryn Hines in 31st (20:55.7) and senior Lia Poore in 78th (22:25.1).

The remaining Rivals to finish were sophomore Tadu Dollarhide in 79th (22:25.7), sophomore Fiona Fraser in 85th (22:43.9), and sophomore Sylvia Butterfield with a personal record time of 22.48.9 and a 86th place finish.

Combined, the girls were scored at 162 points, narrowly edged out of a top-five placement.

The boys team closed off the meet, finishing in fifth place overall.

Senior star Max Allworth-Miles bolted through the finish line to end in fifth place out of 159 runners, earning a podium spot with a time of 16:38.2.

Junior Sebastian Manza made it to the podium as well, with a 14th-place finish and a time of 17:18.9. Senior Glen Dawson placed 30th and earned a personal record time of 17:43.9, and was followed by freshman Soare Johnston in 42nd (17:52.6). Johnston was the third-fastest freshman in the competition. Senior Mark Anderson placed 145th (19:46.6), while sophomore Indigo Gould ran a personal record time of 20:40.2, and sophomore Aidan Nichols finished with a time of 22:30.9.
