Respect, politeness seems to be missing | Letter to the editor

My husband and I bought a lovely lot in the Cape George community with fruit trees, a workshop and a greenhouse. We’ve been looking forward to building and enjoying the sunsets as well as the waterfront lifestyle.

I have to say, after hearing about some experiences some new artist friends have had here recently in the colony (yes, they’re residents, renting a home) and at our beach, I’ve got some serious doubts about proceeding.

I’ve always enjoyed the arts: theater, dance, music, visual arts — and I’ve been lucky enough after bringing a flooded old theater back to life to have been gifted with getting to know a variety of dynamic, creative, passionate artists of all shapes and sizes. If you watch TV or go to the movies, those shows are put on by the artists you’re watching on screen.

If you saw them walking down our streets, I’d imagine you’d get a thrill. When I heard some of the comments made to my friends as they’ve been walking. “Your kind doesn’t belong here.” “They’ll let anyone in here now, won’t they?” “Keep an eye on them - I’m calling the police!” I was appalled.

Seriously. That is not the kind of community I signed up for.

So. I need to know before we invest further in building: Is this typical for Cape George?

I politely respect your right to disagree or dislike me, but I expect the same respect and politeness in return for everyone living in our community. Show a little love, for God’s sake. I need some reassurance that we are building in a community that is a lot more tolerant than what I’m hearing about.
