Take the plunge in Ludlow

Port Ludlow hosts its Polar Plunge at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 30 at the Beach Club, 121 Marina View Drive. T-shirts are to be available for $15 this year, so people can publicize their participation or support of the activity, said Ludlow resident Ned Luce.

Nordland hosts 27th dip

The Nordland General Store on Marrowstone Island hosts the 27th annual Mystery Bay Polar Bear Dip at noon on New Year’s Day, Sunday, Jan. 1. Meet at the Nordland General Store, 7180 Flagler Road, Marrowstone Island. For more information, call 385-0777.

Run trails with teddy

Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society sponsors the 14th annual Teddy Bear Hike at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1. The walk takes place on the Larry Scott Trail. Participants are invited to bring their favorite teddy bear if they wish, along with a lunch and snacks, and meet at the Cape George parking lot. Run for trails coalition

The Peninsula Trails Coalition (PTC) stages its fifth annual New Year’s Discovery 5K and 10K run/walk fundraiser at the Discovery Bay Golf Course on Sunday, Jan. 1. Start time is 11 a.m. at the clubhouse at 7401 Cape George Road, about 5 miles outside Port Townsend. Admission is $30 to register at Get Me Registered, or $35 on the day of the race.

Event proceeds benefit the effort by the PTC to help accumulate grant matching funds for the extension of the Olympic Discovery Trail from Discovery Bay through the Quimper Peninsula to connect with the Larry Scott Memorial Trail.

Fly into the new year

The third annual New Year’s Day birding at Irondale Beach County Park in Port Hadlock is set for 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 1. Meet at the end of the Moore Road parking lot and spend a couple of hours scoping the bay for first-of-year seabirds, shorebirds and forest birds. Sew pet beds with Paws-N-Claws

Paws-N-Claws 4-H Club of Jefferson County invites the community to ring in the new year with a purpose: by helping to sew pet beds for Center Valley Animal Rescue, the Humane Society of Jefferson County and area food banks.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 2 at the 4-H building at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. The event includes a potluck lunch. Tasks include cutting fabric, ironing sewing and more. Those who have sewing machines are invited to bring them, and thread, pet food and monetary donations are welcome. Plant trees Jan. 7

Jefferson Land Trust and the North Olympic Salmon Coalition are seeking volunteers to plant trees at Upper Snow Creek Forest Preserve on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Limited tools and gloves are to be provided at the event, but attendees are welcome to bring their own. The tree planting takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and includes light refreshments and hot drinks.
