I am one hundred percent opposed to the new hotel proposed for the Sanderling site. This is a project that brings absolutely no benefit to residents, only financial benefit to developers from Anacortes — -who are not even a part of this community. This town has a long history of being community based, but in recent years a few people have done tremendous damage to that ethic by focusing on tourist dollars instead of the people who live here. We need less of that, not more. No one wants tourists overrunning the place except those looking to make money from them. The town needs to focus on services for residents, as it has in the past, not on tourists.
When Rite-Aid tried to move into town years ago there was a successful campaign, Rite-Aid, Wrong Town, that kept them out because we wanted to protect Don’s Pharmacy, a wonderful locally owned business. It’s time to remind everyone of that once again. We don’t have to stand by and watch this magical town be turned into a cash cow for a handful of people who care nothing about the town’s history and character and everything about making themselves richer. I hope there will be a very loud NO to the last thing we need here, another hotel. This town has long been an escape from big-city woes and the abuses of rampant capitalism and obscene greed. I will be do everything I can think of to fight this new hotel, and I hope the majority of residents I know don’t want any more tourism and development will join me.
