Lakes and public beaches reopened in Washington this month as part of the first phase of the governor’s “Safe Start” plan. Anglers descended on Jefferson County lakes after trout-stocking in the last week of April and first week of May.
Fishing and other recreation was closed when beaches and watering holes were crowded in the early weeks of the state-wide “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order.
Outdoor recreation, which is encouraged by the governor and should lend itself to social distancing, was becoming unsafe at crowded parks.
As cases began to level off in the state and “Let Us Fish” protests mounted, the governor announced outdoor recreation, including fishing, golfing and state parks could reopen May 5.
State officials remind people that reopening comes with responsibility and if cases begin to spike or social distancing is not being practiced, recreation will be closed again.
