Rangers crush Crescent in football

James Miller rushed for three touchdowns and Deakon Budnek and Dominic Smith each added two more as the Quilcene offense overwhelmed the Crescent Loggers 50-6 in 1B varsity football Saturday.

The mismatch in Joyce propelled the Rangers into postseason district play, with Quilcene now set to play Lake Quinault this Saturday at Port Townsend Memorial Stadium.

The loser-out game, with the winner going to the state playoffs, kicks off at 1 p.m.

Against Crescent last weekend, the Rangers wasted little time in putting the contest out of the Loggers’ reach.

Quilcene scored 30 points in the first quarter, and added two more touchdowns in the second, to build a 44-0 halftime lead.

Crescent collected its only points in the game in the third, and the Rangers tacked on their final touchdown in the fourth to finish 50-6.

Budnek paced the Ranger rushing attack, carrying seven times for 142 yards, including one run for 62 yards. In addition to his two touchdowns (one was a fumble recovery), Budnek added three 2-point conversions to his point total to finish with 18 in all.

Miller, his fellow senior on the squad, racked up 131 yards on four carries.

Quilcene finished the game with 344 combined rushing yards.

On defense, the Rangers were led by Smith’s 12 tackles (seven solo) and Maxx Budnek’s 10 tackles (seven solo, three assists). In all, the Rangers recorded 30 solo tackles.

Smith added two sacks, with freshman Hunter Simmons also adding a sack.

Quilcene had four interceptions (Andrew Perez-Lopez, 2; Robert Evans, 1; Deakon Budnek, 1).

The big Ranger win pushed Quilcene’s record to 5-4 (3-1 district) while Crescent fell to 3-6 (2-3 district).
