Bellingham-based songstress Havilah Rand and seasoned songwriter David Starr will perform at Rainshadow Recording from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.
Starr’s voice has been honed over the release of nine albums, a series of international tours and opening shows for artists such as John Oates of Hall & Oates, Karla Bonoff, the Steel Wheels and Survivor.
“Beauty And Ruin,” Starr’s latest project, was produced and arranged by Oates, and co-produced by himself and David Kalmusky.
The collection of songs was inspired by “Of What Was, Nothing Is Left,” a novel written by Starr’s grandfather in 1972, and listening to them is like watching a movie, according to Oates.
“The cinematic aural landscape visually evokes a classic tale of tragedy, love gone wrong and an exploration of human nature and all its flaws,” Oates said.
“Beauty and Ruin” and a new edition of “Of What Was, Nothing Is Left” are set for release this month.
From the jazz halls of New York City, to the post-grunge scene of Seattle, Rand’s career has spanned several decades and multiple genres.
Rand recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest after a 10-year stint in Austin, Texas, where she earned herself a steady audience and a respected name amidst a community of stellar musicians.
Rand’s songs and voice have been compared to those of Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone, and her songwriting has been described as blending a rootsy, rhythmic edge with a poetic lyricism born of adventure, self-exploration and artistry at its most poignant.
