GRANDVIEW — Quilcene senior Ben Bruner busted through the middle to score a 37-yard go-ahead touchdown Saturday night to lead the Rangers into their second Class 1B state football semifinals.
Quilcene (12-0) erased a 16-point halftime deficit to edge Sunnyside Christian 54-50 in a quarterfinal matchup held at a neutral site at Grandview High School.
“They had some players make some great plays, but we have the heart,” Bruner said.
The Rangers will play the winner of the Neah Bay-Odessa contest next weekend. Sunnyside Christian (10-2) had it season come to an end.
The teams’ destinies appeared to be different early on as the Knights put up 24 points in the second quarter. One came on a fumble return that appeared to be a forward pass, and another on an interception return that pushed momentum into Sunnyside Christian’s favor.
“That kind of makes it more special when sometimes things don’t go your way,” Quilcene coach Trey Beathard said.
